Progressives have been ramping up their push to expand Medicare in an upcoming legislative package, with the goal of lowering the eligibility age and adding additional benefits. Then this past Tuesday, Senate Democrats on the Budget Committee announced that they struck an agreement on a $3.5 trillion budget resolution that includes spending for President Biden’s sweeping social agenda.
This effort is expected to set the stage to pass reforms like expanding the child tax credit, offering paid medical and family leave, and hopefully even overhauling the country’s immigration system.
Senate Majority Leader Schumer stated the $3.5 trillion agreement would go beyond traditional infrastructure and include a historic expansion of Medicare, allowing coverage for the first time for the hearing, dental, and vision. Eligibility would also be lowered from 65 to 60 as well, a huge coup for Medicare.
While this marks a significant step in the administration’s process, it also sparks the beginning of a long summer of negotiations. What does this mean for your Medicare coverage?
