Travel Insurance Vs. Expat or International Health Insurance

If you’re an expat or frequent travel, it’s essential to remain insured while away from your home country. However, did you know that travel and international health insurance aren’t the same? Yes, both are for those who spend time abroad, but the intended purpose of each insurance plan is entirely different.

Travel insurance offers financial protection from the potential pitfalls of traveling, like:

  • Lost luggage or travel documents
  • Travel delays
  • Theft of personal belongings
  • Personal liability
  • Trip cancellation
  • Emergency Medical Coverage
  • And even more!

In terms of medial coverage, it’s important to note that travel insurance is intended top roiled short-term emergency medical treatment within your specified destination or period of cover. Such medical coverage could also be limited, and if you need further treatment, you’ll be expected to receive it back in your home country. So, even for minor or non-emergency procedures, you’ll likely have to pay out of pocket or — use an international health insurance plan.

International health insurance for expats and frequent travelers, on the other hand, is different than travel insurance. First, a typical coverage policy charges monthly, quarterly, semi, or yearly premiums, along with varying deductibles for medical services at home and abroad. Secondly, the extra benefits like protection against theft of personal documents or missed flights are not traditionally included in international health insurance plans because it’s solely focused on providing health coverage. An international health insurance plan is set up to cover you for the length of stay, even if you are relocating from one country to another. Another benefit — you can get coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.

Which coverage should I buy?

If you primarily reside in your country of birth and occasionally take trips abroad, we recommend you tick with temporary travel insurance. It will provide all of the coverage you need to access emergency health care services during your vacation, plus you’ll get non-medical benefits like protection against theft

However, if you live abroad as an expat or travel frequently for work or any other reason and need constant running travel insurance, we would recommend a an international health insurance plan. You can enjoy benefits like:

  • PPO insurance
  • Insurance doesn’t expire
  • Not tied to any special election timeframe.
  • Applicants don’t need a U.S. Social Security Number
  • Applicants don’t need a U.S. visa
  • Approval within 24 hours
  • Coverage begins immediately.
